Hybrid propulsion combines an internal-combustion engine with an electric machine. The electric drive unit relieves the load on the combustion engine particularly in situations in- volving above-average fuel consumption such as driving off or accelerating. It helps to cut down fuel consumption and CO2 output especially in urban traffic. Pollutant emissions are thus reduced. Hybrid vehicles are already on the market as long-range vehicles suitable for everyday use.
By comparison with a conventional drive unit, the hybrid can save up to 25% of fuel.
